Bihar is located in the eastern part of the country, occupying
the total land area of 94,163 sq km. It is situated between 21 degree
58'10" to 27 degree 31'15" North Latitudes and 82 degree 19'50"
to 88 degree 17'40" East Longitudes. It is bounded on the north by
Nepal, on the east by West Bengal, on west by Uttar Pradesh and on the
south by Jharkhand. It has a number of rivers, the most important of which
is the Ganga. The other rivers are the Sone, Poonpoon, Falgu, Karmanasa,
Durgawati, Kosi, Gandak, Ghaghara, etc. Since it lies in the tropical
to sub tropical region, rainfall here is the most significant factor in
determining the nature of vegetation. The topography of Bihar can be easily
described as a fertile alluvial plain occupying the Gangetic valley. The
plain extends from the foothills of the Himalayas in the north to a few
miles south of the river Ganges. Rich farmland and lush orchards extend
throughout the State.
Bihar has always been a land of attractive economic opportunities.
It is endowed with an enviable mineral resources base, including steatite,
pyrites, quartzite, crude mica, limestone, etc. Its bountiful agro climatic
resources and the gains of the Green Revolution have enabled the State
to become a leading producer of agriculture commodities, like rice, wheat,
sugarcane, gram , jute, etc. It is also one of the largest producers of
fruit and vegetables in the country. In addition, there are large vital
industrial units in the State in the sectors of textiles, leather, information
technology, engineering goods and tourism. Bihar has been home to a large
number of industrial houses, both from India and abroad. As a result,
Bihar has embarked upon a path to become a vibrant and globally competitive
industrial economy.
