The Government of Daman and Diu has been making considerable
efforts to attract large investments into the Union Territory (UT). It
has undertaken several infrastructural projects to provide sound physical
connectivity of the UT with the other parts of the country. Adequate transportation
system and efficient power supply in the UT is essential to make it one
of the preferred destination for the investors. Its transport links by
road, rail and air to the business centres of Mumbai, Surat, Baroda and
Ahmedabad are of vital importance. All such infrastructural facilities,
including proper telecommunication network, facilitates entry of new industry
players; provides much desired impetus to industry and tourism; as well
as seeks to improve the overall quality of life of the people.
Roadways
The total length of roads in Daman and Diu are 191 km and
78 km respectively. Daman is situated on the southern border of Gujarat
State. It is at a distance of about 193 Km from Mumbai and 367 Km from
Ahmedabad. Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway No. 8 connects Daman via
Vapi. Diu is situated on the Saurashtra Coast, about 90 Km south of Veraval
and 200 Km from Rajkot. Gujarat State transport buses and private luxury
coaches are available here in plenty from Mumbai, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Rajkot,
Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Veraval, etc.
Railways
There is no railway link with Daman and Diu. The nearest
railway station from Daman is Vapi (about 12 kms), on western railway
on Mumbai-Delhi route. All major express/mail and local trains stoppage
are accessible at Vapi. Taxi Service is also available between Daman and
Vapi on charge per head basis. Other nearby railway head is Valsad Junction,
about 35 Kms. Similarly, Diu do not have railway facility. Its nearest
railway station is Veraval, which is directly connected to Rajkot, Ahmedabad
and other major cities by train.
Aviation
Diu is well-connected by air. It has one airport at Nagoa
which provides Diu-Mumbai daily flights by Jet Airways. Daman's nearest
airport is Mumbai, where both domestic and international flights are
easily available.
Power
Daman and Diu gets adequate power allocation from Central
Sector power stations in the western region. All villages in the Union
Terriitory have been electrified.
Telecom
Efficient telephone services exists in the Union Territory
through STD and ISD facilities to every important place, both national
and international. Telex and fax facilities are also easily available.
