The State has well-developed transportation system, comprising
of roadways, railways and airways. It is also endowed with efficient and
reliable power and telecom network. In order to fully utilise the capacity
of all such infrastructure facilities as well as to upgrade their standards,
the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has undertaken several infrastructural
projects.
Roadways
The total road length maintained by PWD in the State has
reached to 15,012 km. As many as 84 road projects are under execution.
Jammu and Kashmir is very well connected with the rest of the country
through National Highway up to Leh through Kargil (Ladakh).
Railways
The State is well-linked to the rest of the country through
a reliable rail network. The rail connectivity has been extended up to
Jammu. Work on Jammu-Udhampur railway line has been completed. While,
work for extension of railway line to Srinagar and Baramulla has been
taken up. Also, Udhampur -Katra and Qazigund- Baramulla Rail link project
has been taken up as national project.
Airways
Srinagar, Jammu and Leh are major airports, connecting Jammu
and Kashmir with the rest of the country. The Srinagar airport has been
upgraded to international level.
Power
The States total electricity requirement is met
by purchasing power from national grid. Top priority has been accorded
to power sector with great thrust to tap State's vast hydroelectric potential
estimated at 20,000 MW. A new policy has been announced to promote private
investment in small hydroelectric projects upto 25 MW. However, seven hydel
projects with generating capacity of 2798 MW have been given to National
Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) for execution.
Telecommunication
Modern telecommunication facilities of ISD, STD, Telex
and Fax are widely available across the State. All districts in the State
are connected through computer network. The State also has access to internet
facilities provided by the Government agencies as well as by few private
agencies.
