Tamilnadu has made tremendous progress
in infrastructure development. Infrastructure development of Tamil Nadu
is rated as “one of the Best” by several independent studies. Tamil Nadu
is in the forefront of the Indian sub-continent in providing an efficient
transport services to the people. Transport facilities is a basic ingrain
in a modern society in bringing people together and for the improvement
of the society. The Tamil Nadu Government, with its transport corporations
provides various types of services like metro, mofussil, express, ghat
services etc. to bring the people together from the nook and corner. Tamil
Nadu offers state-of-art telecom infrastructure for high speed large volume
data transfer, video conferencing, etc. to meet the requirements of software
/ BPO companies.The Government has encouraged private sector participation
in the process of infrastructure development. This has resulted in rapid
expansion of railways, roadways and capacity enhancement of the ports.
Road network of the State influences considerably the economic development,
population distribution, size of cities and towns, environmental quality,
energy consumption, access to social infrastructure and above all the
quality of life.
Ports
Tamil Nadu has a coastline of about
1,000 Kms. Along this coastline, there are three major ports of Chennai,
Ennore and Thoothukudi and 15 minor ports, which include:- Cuddalore;
Kattupalli; Nagapattina; Ennore Minor Port; Pamban;Thiruchopuram; Rameswaram;
PY 03 Oil Field; Valinokkam; Thirukkadaiyur; Kanniyakumari; Punnakkayal;
Colachel; Manappad; Koodakulam. The major ports come under the control
of Government of India whereas the minor ports come under the control
of the State Government. The Tamil Nadu Maritime Board is responsible
for administering, controlling, regulating and managing the minor ports
in Tamil Nadu.
Aviation
There are five airports in Tamil Nadu,
namely, Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem. Chennai
Airport is the largest in Southern India, handling 270 passenger flight
and 28 cargo flights per week. It, being an international airport in the
southern region, is the main centre of airline routes.
Roadways
Tamil Nadu is in the forefront in developing
road infrastructure. The total length of road in the State is 1,88,700
Km (as on 31st March 2007). The density of road network is 286 Km per
lakh of population which is higher than the all India average of 258.20
Km and 137 Km per 100 Sq.Km area as against the all India average of 74.90
Km.
Railways
The total length is 4,181 km and the
main junctions are Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.
Power
The total installed capacity for electricity
in the State is 8,249 MW. The installed capacity of State Sector is 5,288
MW, and that of Private Sector is 1,058 MW.
Telecom
The State offers state-of-the-art telecommunications
infrastructure for high-speed large volume data transfer, video conferencing
etc. The infrastructure includes 2,138 telephone exchanges with an installed
capacity of 4.6 million lines. The world's biggest and India's first private
submarine Optical fibre Cable project i2i network with a bandwidth of
8.4 tbps will make Chennai the 'Connectivity Gateways of India'.
