Mizoram has a rich reserve of resources which can be exploited for setting up various industrial units in the State. The abundant availability of bamboo and a variety of horticultural crops can be a source of numerous advantages for the investors. Being the second most literate State, it has the capacity of becoming most IT literate State in the country. In addition, its beautiful landscape and rich cultural heritage makes it an attractive tourist destination. Thus, there exist investment opportunities in several sectors of the State.
Bamboo
Mizoram has an abundant reserve of bamboo forest covering 12,54,400 ha and contributing 14% of the all India bamboo distribution. It has 20 bamboo species, of which Melocanna baccifera (Mautak) is predominant and occupies 95% of the bamboo afforested land in the State. Bamboo is widely used in the state:-
- To irrigate vast tracts of agricultural land;
- To make dams, dikes, sluice gates, farm implements, props, stakes, floats fish trap, silk cocoon trays, chicken coops, windbreak barriers and other such articles;
- To construct pillars, posts, stilts, rafters, roofs, floors, walls, etc;
- as an ideal material for earthquake resistant and emergency housing;
- In handicrafts, furnitures, handmade papers, handlooms, curtains, toothpicks, chopsticks, incense sticks and the like;
- To make paper pulp, rayon, charcoal, etc.
The State Government invites investors for setting up of industrial units in all the above areas, either in Joint Venture with Mizoram Bamboo Development Agency or other with local entrepreneurs.
Agro-horticulture
Agriculture is the mainstay of the people of Mizoram with about 80% of the total population engaged in it. The main pattern of agriculture followed is jhum or shifting cultivation. The climatic condition of the state and its location in tropic and temperate zone have contributed to the occurrence of a wide spectrum of rich and varied flora and fauna. It offers opportunities for growing a variety of horticultural crops:- fruit crops like Mandarin Orange, Banana, Passion Fruit, Grapes, Hatkora, Pineapple, Papaya, etc.; flowers like Anthurium, Bird of Paradise, Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Rose,etc; and spices like Ginger, Turmeric, Black Pepper and Bird's eye Chillies. People have also started extensive cultivation of oil palm, medicinal and aromatic plants. All agri-horticultural output of Mizoram is of very high-value in national and international markets.
Information Technology
Mizoram recognizes IT as the fastest and the most advanced vehicle of change for all-round progress and development of the State. Accordingly, it advocates widespread proliferation of IT in the State through a well-defined policy framework for promotion of IT in the fields of e-governance; empowerment of the people and the society; education; industry; health; rural development; agriculture; tourism, etc. This will enable Mizoram to achieve the goal of becoming a strong and prosperous State.
Tourism
Mizoram, with its abundant scenic beauty and a soothing climate, has a tremendous scope for developing tourism related industries. The investment avenues in its tourism sector include:-
- Creation of facilities for adventure and wildlife, eco tourism, amusement parks and other entertainment units, health farms, etc.
- Hotels and lodges.
- Travel agencies, tour operators and tourist transport services.
- Convention/ seminar centers.
There are various places of tourists interest in the State. The major being:-
- Aizawl, located at nearly 4,000 ft above sea level, is a religious and cultural centre of Mizoram.
- Champhai is a beautiful resort on the Myanmar border.
- Tam Dil, a natural lake with virgin forests, is 60 km from Aizawl and 10 km from Tourist Resort of Saitual.
- Vantawng Falls, 5 km from hill station Thenzawl, are the highest and most beautiful waterfalls in Mizoram.
The Department of Tourism has also opened tourist lodges at Aizawl, Lunglei, Champhai, Saiha, Lawngtlai; wayside restaurants at Thingdawl, Hnahthial, Kawlkulh; recreational centre at Beraw Tlang; and Alpine Picnic Hut at District Park near Zobawk.
