Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory (UT) in the
Union of India, with a total land area of 32 sq km. About 43.6% of the
population lives in rural areas, while 56.3% of the population lives in
urban areas. Lakshadweep is a group of about 27 islands, of which only
11 are inhabited. These coral islands consist of 12 atolls, three reefs
and submerged sand banks. They are irregularly scattered in the Arabian
Sea and lie about 220 to 440 kms from the coastal city of Kochi in Kerala.
These islands are linked with Kochi by ship, helicopter and plane services.
Lakshadweep lies between 8 degree to 12 degree 3' North
Latitude and 71 degree to 74 degree East Longitude. It has a coast line
of 132 Km, lagoon area of 4,200 sq. km, territorial waters of 20,000 sq.
km, as well as exclusive economic zone of 4 lakhs sq. km. It is the only
coral reef island in India which is rich flora and fauna. Due to its beautiful
beaches and pollution-free environment, it has become a great tourist
destination for watersports, fishing etc.
The people of UT are mainly dependent on agriculture for
their livelihood. Coconut is the only major crop here. Fishing is another
main stay of the people. However, Lakshadweep is not very industrially
developed territory. There are few small industrial units such as boat
building, tuna canning, coir yarn spinning, fiber factory, bakeries, hosiery
factory, vinegar and jaggery making, etc. Some of the industries like
oil and flour mill and furniture making are available under co-operative
sector.
As a result, the Administration of Lakshadweep has been
making all efforts to attract investors into the economy. It has been
undertaking several policy measures and incentives for the overall upliftment
of the territory.
