Nagaland, with a total land area of 16,579 sq km, is one
of the hill States located in the extreme North-Eastern part of India.
It is bounded by Myanmar on the East, Arunachal Pradesh on the North,
Assam on the West, and Manipur on the South. It is situated between the
26.6 degree to 27.4 degree North Latitude and 98 degree to 96 degree East
longitude. The State is mostly mountainous, except those areas bordering
Assam valley. Mount Saramati is the highest peak in Nagaland with a height
of 3,840 metres, and its range forms a natural barrier between Nagaland
and Myanmar. Due to its strategic location, the State has a huge potential
to develop into an international business and trade hub in the East Asian
region.
The State is endowed with prosperous and varied cultural
heritage. It is very rich in bio-diversity, both flora and fauna. It has
several types of forests, covered with gigantic trees. Agriculture and
animal husbandry, including poultry, are the main occupations of the people
of Nagaland, Nagas. Jhum or shifting cultivation is the main agricultural
practice. Nagaland has a favourable climate for growing different varieties
of crops, vegetables, fruits, medicinal herbs, etc. However, the natural
skill of the Nagas lies in basketry, pottery, spinning, weaving, carving
and dyeing metal work. Traditional village industries based on local forest
product forms the backbone of the manufacturing sector of the State.
Blessed with beautiful landscapes and deep valleys, Nagaland
is an ideal place for trekking, rock climbing, jungle camping and other
adventurous activities. It is located amidst the gentle green hills of
the Himalayas. It possesses rich reserves of minerals such as petroleum,
natural gas, coal, nickel, cobalt, chromium, etc. As a result, increasing
number of tourists are visiting the State every year. Besides, skilled
and hardworking human resource is available in the State.
All such advantageous features provide conducive climate
for attracting significant investments into the State. Accordingly, the
Government of Nagaland has announced several policies and schemes so as
to motivate the entrepreneurs to set up their industrial units in the
State. There exists numerous opportunities in the various sectors of the
economy, especially in handlooms, handicrafts, sericulture, information
technology, tourism, etc.
